Thoughts and Observations, Part I

I learn a lot from Heart Check participants.

The journey towards cardiovascular disease (heart attack, stroke, elevated blood pressure) prevention seems complex and simple at the same time.  I think this because living to stay well depends on several factors, heredity, environment, individual choice and lifestyle habits.  Personal stories of challenge, problem solving and overcoming barriers towards a healthier heart amaze me.

RMH Nutrition Services and the Heart Check program invite you to tour the Food Lion grocery store in Timberville with Registered Dietitian Penelope Ferguson Wednesday, July 14th.  She will lead you on a tour of the store, demonstrating how to read labels and select the healthiest food options for you and your family.  These tours are designed to fit your needs, allowing time for questions and brainstorming solutions to common grocery shopping problems.

Participants should meet in the front of the store around 6:45pm.  Tours begin at 7pm.  Cost is $15.00 per person or $20.00 per couple.

Location:  New Market Community Park

Cost:  $15.00 thru July 1st; $20.00 July 2 & 3

                 Cost to walkers:  $10.00

Details:  Race Day Registration is from 6:30a.m. – 7:30 a.m. at the park.

                     No refunds; no exceptions.

                     Course will be open for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

                     Walkers are welcome and will be timed on a separate 5k route.

“I don’t drink calories.”

I met a Heart Check participant recently who said, “I don’t drink calories.  If I want a calorie, I am going to eat it.”  I chuckled at the time. This comment makes me think about mindless and quickly ingested calories in regular sodas, specialty coffees or sugared sport drinks.
